My friend Mike challenged me to give him my best movies of all time list. This seems an impossible task to me. So he said he'd settle for a best of the decade list. This was still difficult but I narrowed it down to my 30 favorite films of the past 10 years, 2000-2009. I put them alphabetically because it's just too time consuming to try and rank them. The list still feels incomplete at 30 but hopefully your Netflix queues will thank me. Or you can judge me—that's equally as fun.
Almost Famous
Amélie
The Aviator
Before Sunset
Brokeback Mountain

"Almost Famous"? Really? Even though it features the worst — literally, the worst — performance by a lead actor in the entire history of film? Where is Patrick Fugit now, you might ask. Well, it turns out what little paid acting work he can still get is on movies with titles like "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant." Still, it's remarkable Cameron Crowe could find someone as lame and untalented as he is to play himself in a movie.
"Mr. Fugit, who has the abashed charm of a pubescent Jeff Bridges, is remarkable in his first film role. He falters a bit when he has to show big emotions, but for the most part he is perfect as a wise, credulous child trying out a series of grown-up stances, looking for the one that feels right."
-A.O. Scott, who's opinion about acting I rate much higher than yours.
I love Almost Famous and totally agree it deserves a spot in the Top 30. And HECK YES to Wet Hot American Summer. I actually hated the Aviator though. And how come Up didn't make the cut? That movie was amazing.
A.O. Scott doesn't know his ass from a ham sandwich. Besides, if Fugit were as good an actor as Scott thinks he is, it seems logical that he'd still be acting. The fact that no one in their right mind would actually cast him in a film means I'm smart and A.O. Scott is dumb and overpaid.
